Licensing Issue in Microsoft 365

I need help with a data recovery issue for some of our users. We have a Microsoft 365 tenant, and licenses for 17 users were removed on June 27, 2025. These user mailboxes were not converted to shared mailboxes, and no holds or retention policies were applied to them. I now need to access the data from these mailboxes.

  1. Is there any possible way to recover the mailbox data after this amount of time? I understand the default 30-day soft-delete period has expired.

  2. If the data is truly unrecoverable, what are the best practices for offboarding users in the future to prevent this from happening again? We have only 3 users now and the licenses are the Microsoft 365 Business Basic licenses.

    This is unfortunately not the proper set of Forums for this question as we are not an M365 Forum. This should go into the M365 side
     
    however, I suggest you immediately open a ticket via the Administrator Portal in O365 so you can get help as if they soft delete happened by hard delete has not you might be able to get the data back. After that they may be able to assign the accounts to someone else you delineate or you will need to re-establish those 17 accounts (if you didn't delete them, just deactivated them)

    Contact your Microsoft account manager/vendor manager and also get a P1 ticket opened. This is most likely to yield quicker results with constant follow ups. Hoping for the best results for you . All the best.
